I've realized lately that I can count my true friends on one hand. I've realized that I'm not the kind of girl who needs to be surrounded by lots of friends, I'm the kind of girl who needs a few people (even if that's just 3 or 4) who "get me" and genuinely care. And I've realized that that's ok.
I've also realized that I shouldn't allow people who don't value or respect me to waste my time (or my tears, or my text messages, or my friendship). That may sound harsh, but it's true. Certain people have shown me that I don't mean enough to them to be treasured…and I accepted it. Simply because I didn't want to lose their friendship. It seemed like the right thing to do for a long time, but trust me, it ISN'T. You deserve friends who show how much they care about you. Who laugh with you, but also trust you with the not so great parts of life. Who treasure and value you. THOSE are the kind of people you should surround yourself with, even if you can only find a handful of them in your lifetime. And if that's the one lesson I've learned from 2015, I'm content with that.
It's really interesting for me to compare the people I started the year with, to the people I've finished the year with. And looking around at the people I'm surrounding myself with now makes me very hopeful that I've got an amazing year ahead of me. And I'm so excited to see what 2016 will bring.

ReplyDeleteVery relatable and inspiring. I almost feel like weeding through my phone contacts now to see who has really "been there", you know?

I completely agree. It's not worth having people who make you feel bad about yourself in your life. It's 100% better to surround yourself with those who care.
