DIY quote canvas

Hello lovelies!

I recently re-decorated my room, and there were a few spaces on my walls that seemed kind of empty.  So I decided to make a cute diy to fill the space :)  As you probably know, a lot of stores sell canvases with quotes painted on them, but they can be quite expensive!  And it's actually super easy to make your own! (even if you're terrible at painting letters, like me!)

All you'll need is:
  • A canvas (mine was from the dollar store...very inexpensive and it worked great!)
  • A foam paintbrush (and some smaller brushes for touch ups if you want)
  • Acrylic paints of your choice
  • An exacto knife
  • A quote of your choice printed onto regular paper

Step 1:  Using your exacto knife, carefully cut out the letter from your quote to form a stencil.  This process takes a while and can be a bit frustrating, so just turn up the music and take your time ♥

Your finished stencils should look something like this ↓

Step 2: Paint a base layer onto your canvas using any paints, patterns, and colors that you choose.  If you want you can skip this step and paint your quote onto a plain canvas, but I decided to paint mine.  Once the paint is dry, you are ready for the next step!

Step 3: Hold your stencil against the canvas and carefully press paint onto the cut out letters using your sponge brush.  Don't worry if it turns out a bit messy.  Since our stencil is made of flimsy paper, smudges are almost unavoidable (but we'll fix them later!).

Step 4: Using the same color as you did for the base coat, paint over any smudges with a small detailing brush.

Step 5 (optional): I decided to add some small details to my letters and a scalloped "frame" with pale violet paint.  I think it added a lot to my project, but this is completely optional!

I really love how this project turned out and it's a lot of fun because it's completely customize-able!  You could use any quote, any canvas size, and any paints!  You could even print out an image (like the outline of a deer) and use the same stencil method :)

Let me know if you try out this project!  I'd love to see your creations!  And also, do you guys remember what's happening on March 26th? ;)

hugs

  1. It looks great - you did a good job! I'm really bad with anything creative but this looks achievable - might have to give it a go. :)

  5. This is awesome! I just saw some really cute canvases with quotes on them at Walmart the other day, and I really wanted to buy a few, but my mom was like, "You can just make one of these so easily". I've been looking around for tutorials, and here you are - with a tutorial!! I love it. :)

Will you pleeeeeeease do a room tour soon? It looks so cute from what I can see. :) <3
